How to open a password-protected PDF (unlock)

Remove open-password restrictions from a PDF you are allowed to access. Enter the password in your browser, download an unrestricted copy, and learn the ethics and limits.

Unlock PDF

Unlock PDF is for documents you legitimately own or are authorized to modify: you supply the correct password, and the tool produces a new PDF without the same open-password requirement (subject to how the file was encrypted).

Legitimate use only

  • Do not use this to bypass protections on content you are not permitted to access.
  • Rights and DRM vary by region and license. When in doubt, ask the document owner.

Typical steps

  1. Open Unlock PDF.
  2. Upload the protected .pdf.
  3. When prompted, enter the password that allows you to view the file.
  4. Process and download the unlocked output.
  5. Verify the new file opens without a password in your viewer before deleting the old copy (keep backups if the workflow is critical).

Limitations

  • Some PDFs use certificate or policy restrictions that cannot be fully removed without the issuer’s tools.
  • Printing or editing locks may behave differently from open passwords depending on the engine.

Security note

Passwords exist in memory only while your tab runs. Still avoid shared or public computers when handling sensitive PDFs.
